Biography

Jack Sargeant is the Welsh Assembly Member for Alyn and Deeside. He was elected on Tuesday 6th February 2018, in a by-election that took place following the death of his late father, Carl Sargeant. In that election, Jack received 11267 votes, equating to 61% share of the vote.

Jack entered the Assembly as the youngest-ever elected Member. His constituency is the location of Deeside Enterprise Zone, home to highly skilled, contemporary manufacturing across a diversity of sectors – from aerospace and automotive to electronics and pharmaceuticals to construction, food and sustainable energy.

As an Assembly Member rooted in his community, Jack was educated locally and has lived in the area all his life. He was educated at Bryn Deva Primary School and Connah’s Quay High School.

He later received his engineering apprenticeship at Coleg Cambria and did his work experience at Airbus. Following that, he worked at DRB, an integrated mechanical and electrical engineering company serving a broad range of industrial sectors.

Before entering the Assembly, he also worked as an engineer at Henrob on Deeside Industrial Estate. The company is a pioneer and market leader in self-pierce riveting, a mechanical fastening process suitable for joining aluminium and also mixed materials that cannot be reliably welded.

Following his election, Jack was appointed by the Assembly onto 3 committees:

In his first speech to Members in the Assembly, Jack paid tribute to his father, calling him the “glue that held our family together”.

“My dad truly loved the community and the people of Alyn and Deeside. He loved the sense of togetherness” he said.

“Our community’s problems are everyone’s problems, and that’s clear by the way local people come together when times get tough.”

“We are of course devastated beyond words,” Jack said, “and we know our grief has and will continue to be shared by all those who knew and loved him.

“I hope that as the representative of a new generation in this assembly, I can do something to build a better, kinder politics for the future,”  he added.

Jack was applauded by AMs in the chamber at the beginning and the end of his speech.

He has pledged to lead on a range of issues, as well as build on the legacy left by his father; jobs and skills, aiming to end youth homelessness, work to end the epidemic of domestic abuse and work to ensure that this Government listens to people – real people and delivers policies which will work for them.
